These days, with computers and technology advancing by leaps and bounds, its not uncommon for most people to have a virus or two. Even though the internet is responsible for most viruses, removable hardware such as Ipods, cell phones, and flash drives can easily infect your computer and other forms of technology. It's almost impossible to be without risk of catching viruses or other forms of malware but, with this bit of information, you too can be more safe while using your computer.
2.Run a Spyware scanner like Spybot Search & Destroy. Spyware is malware installed on your computer for the purpose of spying on you in order to collect bits of information like personal information needed for identity theft and web surfing habits for advertising.
3. Run a good antivirus scanner. Avast! is a free scanner that works well.
4. Disable JavaScript. Most questionable sites that will infect your computer exploit JavaScript.
5. Use WPA wireless encryption instead of WEP. WEP is easily crackable to professionals.
6. Use the different passwords for different sites. If a hacker gets your password and all your accounts use the same password, then the hacker has access to your whole life such as bank accounts, emails, and social networking sites.
7. Disable AutoRun. Removable disk such as Ipods, Iphones, and flash drives can be infected and, when plugged into your computer, could possibly automatically infect your computer.
8. Enable Your Firewalls. Even though not failsafe, enabling your firewalls can help to reduce the number of threats your computer is vulnerable to.
9. Last but not least, be aware of the info you give out over the internet. Don't give out sensitive info that can be used for fraud and other illegal activities. This point cannot be stressed enough. If a sight appears fishy you should leave it immediately. Highly reputable sights should never ask for anything that they didn't need.
With the tips in mind, you can now become more safe both on and off the internet.
